TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Mount Merapi spewed hot clouds again on Wednesday evening, July 5, 2023, at 20:26 local time. This is the first in July after the volcano's last emission at the end of April 2023.

“Tonight's hot clouds are sliding 2,700 meters to the southwest or towards Kali Bebeng,” Head of the Yogyakarta Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG), Agus Budi Santoso, said on Wednesday evening.

Agus explained that when the hot clouds rolled with a maximum amplitude of 60 millimeters for 254.24 seconds, the wind around the volcano area was blowing to the east. “Mount Merapi's activity status remains at Alert Level 3 or Siaga,” he added.

The hot clouds occurred along with rain showers in a number of Yogyakarta areas. Head of the Yogyakarta Meteorology Station of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Warjono issued the weather forecast around Mount Merapi after hot clouds and rainfalls.

“Light rain around Mount Merapi tonight is predicted to continue until early Thursday (July 6),” Warjono said.
