TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) on July 3, 2023 announced that a tectonic earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.0 in Richter scale, shook Keerom, Papua this morning at 09:51 a.m. (02:51 GMT). According to Daryono, the Head of Earthquake and Tsunami Department of BMKG, the quake was "shallow and was caused by an active fault movement."
Daryono stated that the quake was caused by a strike-slip fault movement and hit 79 km southwest of Keerom at a 10 km depth.
In Wamena, Sentani the quake was felt similar to the vibrations of a passing truck. The intensity scale of the earthquake vibrations in the area falls on III MMI. However, in Jayapura the quake was actively felt by some people, with the intensity scale of II - III MMI.
Based on the model created by the BMKG, this earthquake will not trigger a tsunami. Additionally, as of 10:05 a.m., there are no recorded potential aftershocks.
Daryono urges people to stay calm and ignores any potentially false news. He also asks the citizens to avoid any damaged or cracked buildings due to the earthquake.
