Mount Merapi Emits Hot Clouds Today, the First in December

30 December 2022 16:10 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Mount Merapi emitted a torrent of hot clouds on Friday, December 30, 2022, which is the first occurence in December 2022. Merapi spewed hot clouds at 06:55 AM western Indonesian time (WIB) with an amplitude of 25 mm and a duration of 213.3 seconds.

“It flows over 900 meters towards Kali Putih, west of the mountain,” said the Head of the Yogyakarta Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG), Agus Budi Santoso, on Friday, December 30, 2022.

The volcano’s current status, he added, is still on alert level III or Siaga since November 5, 2020.

From December 16 to December 22, 2022, BPPTKG Yogyakarta observed three lava avalanches flowing to the southwest or upstream of Bebeng and Putih Rivers with maximum sliding distance recorded was at 1,500 meters.

The rumbling sounds from Mount Merapi were heard four times in Pos Babadan at low to moderate intensity. Meanwhile, the volume of the southwest dome remains constant at 1,616,500 cubic meters, while the middle dome is at 2,772,000 cubic meters.

On Thursday, December 29, Mount Kerinci located in Kerinci Regency of Jambi and South Solok of West Sumatra was reported to experience increasing tremor activity which has the potential to trigger an eruption. People around the area are advised to be more cautious.

“Explosive eruptions can occur suddenly and cause ejection of rocks (incandescent ciders) as far as 3 kilometers,” he said on Thursday, December 29, 2022, as quoted from Antara. The volcano’s status remained at alert level II or Waspada.
