Lampung, Bengkulu Struck by Earthquakes Early Today; BMKG Explains

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Earthquakes rocked Bengkulu and Lampung in the early hours of today, September 9, 2022. The two quakes were centered at sea and land, respectively. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the strongest shock was felt at an intensity scale of IV MMI, meaning that it can be felt by many indoors.

M4.9 quake at 00:52 western Indonesian time (WIB)

The tectonic quake that hit Bengkulu was measured at 4.9 magnitudes. Its epicenter was at sea, 30 kilometers south of Air Periukan, Seluma, and at a depth of 64 kilometers. The agency previously announced it was 5.0 magnitude.

“This is a shallow quake triggered by plate subduction activity,” said the agency’s acting Head of the quake and tsunami center, Daryono, in a written statement.

The shaking occurred in Bengkulu City, Seluma, and Lampung at an intensity scale of III MMI. The agency confirmed that it had no potential to cause a tsunami.

M3.2 quake at 02:36 WIB

In Lampung, the 3.2 magnitude quake was centered on land, 10 kilometers southwest of Pesawaran, Lampung. However, its depth was recorded at only two kilometers.

BMKG stated that this earthquake was stronger than that in Bengkulu. Its tremor was felt up to the intensity scale of IV MMI in Pesawaran and Pringsewu.
