Earthquake Jolts Bengkulu City Again from Megathrust Zone

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bengkulu City is again rocked by an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8, previously recorded with 5.1 magnitudes, at 10:21 local time today, August 25, 2022. Two days ago, a stronger quake jolted the region and its vicinity. Its tremor was even felt until Banten and South Kalimantan.
Today’s quake was felt at the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) level III in the city. Meanwhile, the previous quake’s shaking reached up to MMI level IV.
According to the agency’s acting head of the quake and tsunami center, Daryono, the quake was centered in the Indian Ocean, precisely 98 kilometers northwest of Enggano, Bengkulu, and at a depth of 40 kilometers.
It occurred in the megathrust zone, similar to the previous incident. “It is a shallow quake caused by the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian plate which sinks under the Eurasian Plate,” he said in a written statement.
The BMKG has not yet received a report on the damage following the quake. The modeling results showed that it did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.
