TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Metro Police Traffic Director, Sr. Commissioner Sambodo Purnomo Yogo, said that the police would not provide any prizes to the winner of the drag race entitled "Latber (Joint Practice) Street Race" in Ancol, North Jakarta. The event aiming to accommodate street racers is planned to be held on January 16.
"There is no prize because the concept is a community joint practice," he told Tempo on January 12.
Sambodo explained that the concept of the event is a joint practice with street racing communities. It will be held based on the mutual agreement of the said communities. Therefore, the police will not provide any reward for the participants.
"Only door prizes," said the commissioner without detailing the type of the door prizes.
The drag race event in Ancol is expected to turn the negative stigma towards street races, and to get rid of any street races in Jakarta.
According to Sambodo, the location for the drag race has been approved by the street racers. They have also agreed with the straight track measuring 200-500 meters.
"The purpose of the event is to remove or at least reduce the number of street races. We will accommodate them in one place where their safeties can be maximized," said the Chief.
This event is expected to be the medium where they can race in a more orderly, safer and controlled environment.
