TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The official street racing event dubbed Street Race hosted by Jakarta Metro Police will be held in Ancol area, precisely on Jalan RE Martadinata, North Jakarta. The event was aimed at facilitating illegal street racers.
Jakarta Traffic Police Director Sr. Comr. Sambodo Purnonomo Yogo confirmed that the event scheduled to take place on January 15, 2022, would be in the form of a drag race.
“[It will be held] outside of Taman Impian Jalan Ancol (TMII), [the road] on the side of the river,” said Sambodo at Jakarta Police HQ on Wednesday, December 22.
The road was chosen given its straight track that is suitable for drag races. According to him, the length of the track to be used, either 202, 402, or 502 meters, would be determined later.
The police would also consider turning the road into a racing site for young people. “We are considering whether the location can be used as a training ground for illegal racers. We will arrange the time so that they will not race illegally again,” Sambodo added.
The police would also provide various facilities, ranging from lanes, security, to health.
The plan to host an official street racing event to accommodate illegal racers was first initiated by Jakarta Police Chief Inspector General Fadil Imran. Other than the street racing, the police also planned to hold other activities that could support the local economy during the event.
