TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former presidential candidate Anies Baswedan responded to Ganjar Pranowo's declaration that he would take the role of opposition to the Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka government.
Anies said he was reluctant to take a position on whether to join Prabowo's government since he does not come from a political party with a standardized stance.
"Mr. Ganjar is a member of a political party while I am a regular citizen and I will remain on the path of change," said Anies when met at his residence in Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta, Tuesday, May 7, 2024, during his 55th birthday celebration.
Previously, former presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo stated that he would take the role of opposition to the Prabowo-Gibran government. He said the opposition will enforce a check and balance mechanism on government policies.
“First of all, I declare that I will not join this government,” Ganjar said at the gathering event of the Ganjar-Mahfud campaign team in Jakarta on Monday, May 6. “But I have great respect for this administration, and we will exercise control in the right way.”
Apart from that, Ganjar chose to become an opposition be an opposition party to demonstrate political morality. He believed that the Indonesian way of doing politics needed to improve and have integrity.
He also believes there is no need for mockery among fellow citizens because the most appropriate way to voice criticism is through parliament. “That's the best way we can do, the appropriate actions to carry out control,” he remarked.
