TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several countries in the world have quite high population numbers. The large population in a country factored in the birth rate, mortality rate, and migration rate that occurred in its territory. So, which country has the largest population in the world?
Countries with the Largest Population
According to World Population by Country, there are 10 most populous countries in the world. Here is the list:
1. India
The country with the largest population in the world is India. India is one of the countries on the Asian continent with the highest population, reaching 1,428 billion people. India’s population has surpassed China's, which was previously ranked 1st. The increase in population in India is caused by high fertility rates and the increasingly rapid growth of its young population. As a result, many couples from young families have more than two children.
2. China
Still from the Asian continent, the second country with the largest population is China. For more than four decades, China has always occupied first place as the most populous country, but it has been awarded to India this year. China's population reaches 1,425 billion people. One of the factors in China's population decline is the policy of one child per family to reduce the birth rate.
3. United States
The United States with a population of 339 million people, is ranked 3rd as the country with the largest population. The large population of the United States makes it the most populous country on the American continent, while New York is called the most populous city.
4. Indonesia
Coming in the fourth position is Indonesia with around 279 million people, a 0.82 percent increase from last year. Population growth in Indonesia is influenced by increasing birth rates and domestic migration.
5. Pakistan
Pakistan is in the fifth rank of the country with the largest population. Currently, the population in Pakistan has reached 240.3 million people, a 1.98 percent growth from the previous year. Pakistan is also the 2nd country with the most Muslim population.
6. Nigeria
The total population in Nigeria as of April 2024 is 228 million people. The population growth rate is also quite high because the population of Nigeria was 223 million in the previous year. Meaning, there was a 2.39 percent increase in population in 2024.
7. Brazil
Brazil is the seventh most populous country in the world with 217 million people residing in the country. In 2023, Brazil's population reached 216 million, marking a 0.56 percent increase in the following year.
8. Bangladesh
The total population of Bangladesh is currently 174.3 million with a fairly stable growth rate of 1.03 percent. Bangladesh also ranked fourth as the largest Muslim population after Indonesia, Pakistan, and India.
9. Russia
The ninth most populous country in the world is Russia. The Russian population currently reaches 144 million people, a 0.19 percent decrease from 2023’s 144.4 million due to the declining birth rate. Russia was recorded as the country with the fastest rate of population decline in the world in 2021.
10. Mexico
Finally, the 10th most populous country in the world is Mexico. Mexico's population as of April 2024 is 128 million. This figure has risen compared to the previous year when Brazil’s population reached 127 million people.
