TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 struck off the southern region of East Java on Thursday, December 16, at 06:01:33 Western Indonesian Time (WIB). The quake reportedly caused damages in several areas in Jember Regency.
“Until now, there have been reports of damages caused by the quake in several areas in Jember,” said Daryono, a coordinator for quake and tsunami mitigation at the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Jakarta, Thursday.
The quake was centered at 8.55 degrees south latitude and 113.48 degrees east longitude, or precisely in the sea at 43 kilometers southwest of Jember, and at a depth of 26 kilometers. It was thought to have been triggered by fault activity on the seabed.
The initial magnitude recorded was 5.1 and was later updated to 5.0. Based on the modeling results, it did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.
Daryono said the earthquake shaking was felt strongly in Puger at scale V of the MMI and in Jember at scale IV. The tremor was also felt in Bali, including Denpasar, Kuta, Legian at scale III; Banyuwangi at scale II-III MMI; and Jimbaran, Karangkates, Lumajang, and Bondowoso at scale II of the MMI.
