TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Electronic ID card (e-KTP) graft defendant Setya Novanto appealed to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to accept him as a justice collaborator. He also hoped for a lighter sentencing from the public prosecutor.

“I sincerely ask you to consider me as KPK’s justice collaborator,” Setya sobbed at the corruption court on Thursday, March 22.

Setya Novanto admitted that he laments his past actions up to his suspect naming in the e-KTP graft case. He claimed that his position as the House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker was being used by businessmen for their own personal financial gains.

“That is all my fault because of my carelessness, even though my initial goal as a faction leader in the DPR was simply to support government programs,” said Setya.

The former DPR Speaker had attempted to submit himself as a justice collaborator since January and that he would reveal the names involved in the massive-scale corruption. However, KPK indicated that they will not grant him the justice collaborator status because of Setya’s reluctance in admitting his wrongdoings.

The panel of judges said that Setya Novanto would often reveal the names of other people involved in the systematically massive e-KTP graft case but at the same time would always deny his involvement.

According to the judges, Setya Novanto is better suited as a whistleblower than a justice collaborator.
