Govt to Pay Compensation to Victims of Zahro Boat Accident

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi has promised that the passengers who were killed or wounded in Zahro Express boat fire will get compensation.
“Transport Ministry will arrange treatment for and compensation to our brothers and sisters [victims of boat accident],” Budi told a press conference in his office in Central Jakarta on Sunday, January 1, 2017. “I have contacted [state-owned insurance company] Jasa Raharja in the afternoon,” he said.
He said that the ministry has held talks with Healthcare and Social Security Agency (BPJS) and Jasa Raharja. He has also promised to contact Jakarta administration. “All will be confirmed tomorrow (today), hopefully,” Minister Budi said.
Budi Setyarso explained that the Finance Ministry regulation stipulates that boat accident victims will get Rp25 million each in compensation. Meanwhile, the injured victims will get a maximum of Rp10 million.
Zahro Express boat catches fire on Monday morning, January 1, on Tidung waters, Seribu Islands, North Jakarta. Transport Ministry reported that the boat carried 184 passengers, including crew members. Some 130 passengers survived the incident, while 23 were killed and 31 wounded.
