TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The police traffic corps (Korlantas) revealed that the number of traffic accidents during the 2022 Lilin Jaya Operation throughout the Christmas and New Year (Nataru) 2023 holidays had increased.
Despite that, the number of fatalities decreased by 4 percent, serious injuries by 19 percent, and minor injuries by 5 percent compared to 2019.
"There are quite prominent incidents of people driving on the road, the number of accidents has increased by 11 percent compared to 2019," said the Head of Korlantas, Inspector General Firman Shantyabudi, quoted from Antara today, Wednesday, January 4, 2023.
According to Firman, the most frequent traffic accidents that occur were single-vehicle accidents and head-on collisions. This generally occurs because the driver attempts to overtake the road.
Another accident is the rear-end collision. There are two possible causes for rear-end collisions to occur, most common is due to drivers' lack of concentration or did not keep their distance.
In addition, quite a lot of traffic accidents occur on arterial roads with most of the accidents appearing to be caused by the general public such as housewives, the unemployed, and farmers.
"Likewise, most incidents occurred on motorcyclists. This could be due to high speed or going against the traffic flow and so on," said Firman.
The number of traffic accidents during the 2022 Lilin Jaya Operation would be evaluated by the traffic corps police and all stakeholders. There is also a discussion about returning to manual ticketing and electronic ticketing.
