TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As many as 23 Buddhist worshippers died in a bus accident in Lampang Province, Northern Thailand. The accident happened after the driver lost control of the bus on winding road, making the bus plunged into a 30-meter deep
According to Daily Mail on Thursday, October 24, 23 out of 38 passengers died, while the rest, including the driver, sustained injury. The injured victims were rushed to the nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Police Colonel Somdet Tossaporn confirmed that most of the travellers were women. They are the residents of Saraphi district, Chiang Mai. The accident took place when they were on their way home from a pilgrimage to Wat Ban Wang Maing Charoen Temple in Wang Nuea, Lampang.
According to the investigation, the accident happened because the driver was not used to the terrain in the region. To make matter worse, the bus also had a brake problem.
As a result, the bus hit the road fence and fell into the ravine before striking a big tree.
Police said that the driver is facing charges for causing deaths by reckless driving and can face a maximum of 10 years in prison.
