TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Red Cross or PMI said that the number of casualties in the Cianjur earthquake at noon today has increased to 56 people. Forty of them are children.

"The recorded total number of deaths and injuries is 120 people," PMI Cianjur's Volunteer Corps Commander Ujang Muhammad said on Monday, November 21.

The victims have been evacuated to the Cianjur Regional General Hospital (RSUD), which also suffered damages from the earthquake. PMI Cianjur is still collecting data about the exact number of casualties and injuries.

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake centered in Cianjur Regency shook the area at 13:21 on Monday, November 21. Aftershocks occurred around 16:23 local time.

The earthquake damaged hundreds of buildings in the regency, some even collapsing. According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), at least 343 houses were heavily damaged while the RSUD Cianjur suffered moderate damages. The quake also damaged other public facilities including four government buildings and three educational sites.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that the earthquake could be felt all the way from Greater Bandung, Sukabumi, Garut, Jakarta, to Tangerang. There is no potential for a tsunami as the quake's epicenter was on land.
