Over 3,000 Houses Damaged by Banten Earthquake

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) on Wednesday announced that the magnitude 6.6 earthquake off the coast of Pandeglang, Banten on January 14, damaged 3,078 houses.

The number excludes the damage of 51 school buildings, 17 healthcare facilities, 8 government offices, 3 businesses, and 21 houses of worship.

On January 19, BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari informed that 395 out of the 3,078 damaged houses sustain severe damages.

The region that experienced the most destruction was Pandeglang, followed by Serang, and then Lebak.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on January 20 said there are 3 main factors causing the widespread damages.

The first is the location; Pandeglang is located near the earthquake epicenter. The second is the building construction does not meet safety standards. Lastly, several buildings were built over soft land.
