Police: Recidivists cause Higher Crime Rate during PSBB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Metro Jaya Police Chief Insp. General Nana Sudjana revealed that Jakarta experienced a 10 percent increase in crime rate as the city applies its large-scale social restriction (PSBB) policy. Police claimed that the criminal offenses were committed by recidivists.
"The majority of them are indeed recidivists, the others are first-time offenders who were lured to the life of crime. They roughly constitute 70 to 80 percent of the crimes," said Nana at the Metro Jaya Police headquarters in South Jakarta on Monday, April 27, 2020.
Despite the statistics, the police chief claimed that police have managed to solve 13 of 17 minimarket robberies that have happened during the COVID-19 PSBB and argued that the situation is generally safe.
"Though there are crimes that we already initially predicted," said the police chief.
Nana Sudjana explained that the 10 percent crime growth is due to two aspects; the social restriction that has caused most of city roads to be vacant and empty, and the phenomenon of increasing crime-rate during the holy month of Ramadan.
