TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Geophysics, and Climatology Agency (BMKG) stated that tsunami early warning following an earthquake with magnitude 7.0 in southwest Ternate on late Sunday, July 7, at 22.08 Western Indonesian Time (WIB) was declared to have ended.

The quake was first recorded with a magnitude of 7.1, but an updated measurement showed magnitude 7.0, said the agency’s Earthquake and Tsunami Center Head Rahmat Triyono.

According to Rahmat, his agency issued a tsunami early warning, and so several areas of North Sulawesi and North Maluku were on alert after the strong tremor centered on 133 km southwest of Ternate, North Maluku.

"Based on BMKG monitoring for one hour, there have been 8 aftershocks recorded with a magnitude of 3.5 to 4.9," Rahmat said in a press statement.

This strong earthquake caused panic among people in Ternate and North Sulawesi. They ran out of the house and looked for safe places.
