45 Aftershocks Occur in Mamberamo Papua: BMKG

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded 45 aftershocks occurred in Mamberamo, Papua as of 20:00 Western Indonesian Time (WIB) on Monday, June 24, after a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the region earlier in the day at 08:05 WIB.
The strong tremor was felt in Sarmi, Jayapura, and Wamena following the quake that was allegedly caused by the activity of Anjak Mamberamo Cesarean or Mamberamo thrust.
The quake also triggered Banda Sea earthquake that affected the occurrence of shocks in a broad spectrum of areas. “[The tremor is felt] until Denpasar, Bima, Manokwari, Wamena, even until Darwin City, Australia,” said Daryono, head of the earthquake and early tsunami warning division, in a written statement, Monday, June 24.

Banda Sea quake occurred with a magnitude of 7.3 on the Richter Scale at 09:53 WIB, and was followed by five aftershocks. Aftershocks in Mamberamo Raya and Banda Sea, however, showed decreasing magnitude.
Besides the two strong earthquakes, BMKG recorded another three quakes on Monday, June 24; 4.3 magnitudes in Tasikmalaya, West Java; 4.6 magnitudes in Wuasa, Poso, Central Sulawesi; and 5.2 magnitudes in Bolaang Mongondow, North Sulawesi.
At least 53 earthquakes occurred in Indonesia in varied magnitude and depth. To date, there is no report on casualties and damage.
