TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tourism Minister Arief Yahya announced the construction of a future MotoGP-level street circuit primed as the first at Mandalika’s special economic zone (KEK Mandalika), Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).
“We are eyeing to build a MotoGP circuit. In 2020 we’ll hopefully already have a MotoGP circuit, its first possibly in Mandalika,” said Minister Arief today, Feb. 13, at the Vice Presidential office in Jakarta.
Mandalika is seen as one of the ‘super priority’ regions in hopes to boost the number of foreign tourist visits and plant an added-value on tourism on the 1,175-hectare land.
The international-level circuit construction plan follows the land utilization certificate (HPL) obtained from the National Land Agency at the end of 2016 by the Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC).
The construction plan was kick-started by the signing of the memorandum of understanding between ITDC and global motorsport circuit operator, designer, and developer, Roadgrip Motorsports UK Ltd, and Mrk1 Consulting.
ITDC President Director Abdulbar M. Mansoer said that the Mandalika circuit will be the only street circuit offering views of lagoons, solar-powered villages, gold course, urban and commercial areas, and the Indian Ocean.
