TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning for heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds to residents in a number of provinces in Indonesia on Tuesday.

Based on the BMKG page, on Tuesday, heavy rain was forecast in the provinces of Aceh, Bangka Belitung, Banten, Gorontalo, Jambi, East Java, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, Lampung, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Papua, West Papua.

The same warning was issued for Riau, West Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, West Sumatra, and North Sumatra.

Meanwhile, the provinces of Bali, West Java, West Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, and North Maluku were predicted to experience strong winds.

Head of the BMKG, Dwikorita Karnawati, appealed to the public to remain vigilant against extreme weather and hydrometeorological disasters that will continue to threaten most parts of Indonesia until February 2024.

"This extreme weather can occur during the peak period of the rainy season in January and February. The potential for heavy rain to very heavy, strong winds, and high waves still has a high chance of occurring in most parts of Indonesia, " she said.

She asked communities living in high-altitude areas or areas prone to landslides and floods to remain alert for the impact of extreme weather, such as flooding, flash floods, landslides, slippery roads, fallen trees, and reduced visibility.

"We recommend that periodically or before the activity, the public monitors the weather information issued officially by BMKG. That way it can be more anticipatory if there is extreme weather at any time," Karnawati said.

Deputy for meteorology at BMKG, Guswanto, said that in Java region, there was potential for moderate to heavy rain in Banten, West Java, Central Java, and East Java in the period from January 20 to 23.

Meanwhile, there is potential for moderate and heavy rain in Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, and East Java in the period from January 24 to 26.
