TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning for rainfall in some parts of Indonesia on Wednesday, June 12, 2024. The regions include Bangka Belitung, Banten, Gorontalo, East Java, South Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan , North Kalimantan, Maluku, Papua.
The same warning was also given to West Papua, Riau, West Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, North Sulawesi and North Sumatra, as quoted by Antara.
BMKG issued a heavy downpour warning for Aceh, Lampung and North Maluku. Meanwhile, drizzles are expected in Bengkulu and South Sumatra, while West Java and West Kalimantan are expecting thunderstorms. On the other hand, East Nusa Tenggara will have strong winds today.
Cyclonic circulation is detected in the Sulu Sea and in the Pacific Ocean north of Papua, which forms an area of convergence around the Sulu Sea and the Pacific Ocean north of West Papua to Southwest Papua.
"This condition increases the chance of rain cloud growth around the cyclonic circulation and along the convergence area," said BMKG forecaster Syndhy Indah Pratiwi.
Dry air intrusion from the southern hemisphere crossed the South Papua region, the Arafura Sea, southern Maluku and eastern East Nusa Tenggara. It lifts water vapor in front of the intrusion boundary to become warmer and more humid, namely in Central Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, Maluku, Southwest Papua, West Papua, Central Papua and South Papua.
Strong winds up to 25 knots are observed in Andaman Sea, Indian Ocean southwest of Banten and in northern Australia, which could cause high waves around these areas.
Air temperatures in Indonesia today generally range from 19 to 34 degrees Celsius with humidity ranging from 40 to 100 percent. Meanwhile, sea waves are expected to range from 0.5 to 2.5 meters.
However, BMKG also warns of 2.5 to 4 meters high waves in the waters west of Mentawai to Lampung, the western Indian Ocean, the western and southern Sunda Strait, and the South Indian Ocean from Java to East Nusa Tenggara.
"Also be aware of the potential for tidal flooding tomorrow on the north coast of Central Java," said Syndhy.
