Indonesia Corners 18% of the World's Tuna Production, Ministry Claims

20 June 2024 20:02 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaDirector of Fish Resources Management at the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) Ridwan Mulyana said Indonesia’s tuna resource is abundant, supported by its 6.4 million square kilometers of sea surface area.

“In general, tuna comprises tuna, skipjack tuna, and this group of tuna fish includes tuna, skipjack tuna, and mackerel tuna. Thus, our average production is 1.49 million tons per year," he said on Thursday, 20 June 2024.

Ridwan explained that Indonesia’s top five quality tuna commodities include yellowfin, bluefin, bigeye tuna, albacore, and skipjack tuna. "These five types contribute to 706,400 tons of production average," he said.

Furthermore, he said that around 194,700 tons of tuna are exported per year, contributing to US$962 million. "This is quite significant, and our production share is 18 percent worldwide or 8.3 million tons per year," he said.

According to Ridwan, the focus of tuna management upstream is to sustain the future fishing business. "(It’s about) how we guarantee the availability of tuna resources so they can provide welfare value and boost contributions to the country," he said.

The ministry has a strategy to implement good governance for tuna fisheries, Ridwan said. “Implementation of blue economy principles through measured fishing and aligning economic and ecological aspects," he said.

This strategy is carried out to ensure tuna fishing does not threaten aquatic resources, especially coral reef and mangrove forest habitats.
