BMKG Warns of Tidal Flooding in 6 Coastal Areas during Full Moon

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned of tidal flooding in several coastal areas of Indonesia during the full moon on June 22, 2024.
Head of the BMKG Maritime Meteorology Center, Eko Prasetyo, detailed that based on the water level data and tidal predictions, the tidal floods will likely occur on the coast of North Sumatra, the coast of West Sumatra, the coast of Banten, the coast of Central Java, the coast of East Java, and the coast of Ambon.
The flood will potentially come at differing times for each region. “It will generally affect the coastal and port activities, such as loading and unloading goods at the ports, activities in coastal settlements, as well as salt ponds and inland fisheries," said Eko, quoted from a press release on Thursday, June 20, 2024.
BMKG, said Eko, urged the residents to remain vigilant and anticipate the impact of the high tides. He also advised the public to pay attention to updated maritime weather reports from the official BMKG source.
The following are the potential locations and times for tidal flooding due to the Full Moon phase on June 22, 2024:
1. Coast of North Sumatra
- Belawan and surrounding areas, June 20-25, 2024
2. Coast of West Sumatra
- Padang Coast and Padang Pariaman Coast, June 22, 2024
3. Coast of Banten
- West and south coast of Banten, June 22-26, 2024
- North coast of Banten, June 21-25, 2024
4. Coast of Central Java
- North coast of Central Java, June 24-30, 2024
- Coast of Brebes, Tegal and Pemalang, June 23-30, 2024
5. Coast of East Java
- East Surabaya Coast (including Pasuruan, Sidoarjo, Probolinggo, Kenjeran, and Madura) and Tanjung Perak Port, June 20-25, 2024
6. Coast of Ambon
- Ambon Bay, South Coast of Seram Island, June 22-25, 2024
- Saumlaki, June 23-24, 2024
