TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency or BMKG released early warning for rain with lightning and strong winds in Jakarta today, Thursday, June 13, 2024.
BMKG also provided early warnings for rain in Bekasi Regency, Depok City, Bogor Regency, and Bogor City.
According to the weather agency, the rain will "occur as a brief and local shower from midday to evening."
Aside from Jakarta, several other regions are also warned about the downpour potential, including Riau Islands, Bangka Belitung, NTB, South Kalimantan, West Sulawesi, West Java, and Banten.
West Sumatra, Central Java and East Java, as well as a number of other regions in Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua are also expected to get rainy today.
According to BMKG, the early weather warnings are made based on monitoring of cyclonic circulation in Cenderawasih Bay and the Pacific Ocean east of the Philippines. Both form convergence extending from Papua New Guinea to West Papua and from the Maluku Sea to the Pacific Ocean north of West Papua. Convergence induces the growth of rain clouds.
Convergence areas, outside the influence of the cyclonic circulation, are also observed scattered from the Nias Islands to the Malacca Strait, from South Sumatra to West Sumatra, from East Java to Banten, and from the Java Sea to Bangka Belitung.
Some convergence also extends from South Kalimantan to Malaysia, from North Kalimantan to the Sulu Sea, from Southeast Sulawesi to Central Sulawesi, in the Maluku Sea, from the Halmahera Sea to the northern waters of Southwest Papua, from Maluku to the Seram Sea, and in the Pacific Ocean north of Papua .
In addition to the convergence, confluence with the same effect is observed in the Pacific Ocean north of Papua.
BMKG also monitors wind speed of more than 25 knots in the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean southwest of Banten. This will potentially cause high waves around these waters.
