Death Toll Rises to 2,002 Following C. Sulawesi Quake, Tsunami

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As of 08:54 Central Indonesian Time (Wita), the death toll caused by the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Palu, Central Sulawesi increased to 2,002 people.


“The victims have all been buried,” as stated by an official announcement from the joint task team command post Tempo received today.


According to the data, victims were buried in two ways, individually by their family and in mass-burials. The mass-burial grounds were spread across Paboya (864 bodies), Pantoloan (35 bodies), and Donggola (35 bodies). Meanwhile, the bodies buried by relatives amounted to 1,068 bodies.


The natural disaster left 4,084 people injured with most of them at Donggala with 1,750 people injured. Rescuers are still in search reportedly 671 missing people following the earthquake and tsunami.


“The team continues to evacuate victims and survivors, opening access roads to isolated locations, and help recover people’s economy,” as stated in the press release.


Despite the fact that there are a total of 74,044 taking refuge in Palu, Donggala, and Sigi, local Central Sulawesi administrators continues to urge people upon rebuilding the region’s economy and society as a whole.
