6.1 RS Earthquake Shakes Hits Maluku

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 6.1 Richter Scale (RS) earthquake shook the Tanimbar Islands in the Southeast West Maluku Regency on Friday, August 2, 2018, at 12:42 PM local time.


Public Relations Division of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Jakarta said the earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami. The epicenter of the earthquake is located at Latitude 6.14 degrees South, and Longitude 132.67 degrees East with a depth of 65 kilometers.


The epicenter is located 43 kilometers southeast of Southeast Maluku, 57 kilometers southwest of Tual-Maluku, 208 kilometers northwest of the Aru Islands, and 569 kilometers southeast of Ambon-Maluku.


Tanimbar Islands are a collection of islands in the Southeast West Maluku Regency. Several large islands including Yamdena, Larat, Selaru, Sera, Wuliaru, Nitu, Wotar, Labobar, Molu, Maru, and Fordata.


Earlier on Sunday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 RS also shook the Sumbawa, Lombok and Bali regions.


The Lombok earthquake killed 17 people and injured hundreds, while at the same time damaged thousands of homes and public facilities.
