TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan called on all 2018 Asian Games athletes to focus on the sporting match. “I suggest all athletes participating in Asian Games to prepare the sports, not other things,” said Anies at Jakarta City Halls, Monday, August 20.
The statement delivered following four Japanese basketball athletes sent home upon for spending a night with prostitutes at a hotel in the capital. Anies considered the scandal has tarnished the name of the Japanese contingent.
According to Anies, Indonesia as the host has provided facilities and tourism destinations for the guests. “If you [the athletes] want to study, libraries are opened, as well as art and cultural places and movie theaters,” he said.
Japanese delegation's chief Yasuhiro Yamashita in a conference press confirmed he had sent home four athletes namely Yuya Nagayoshi, Takuya Hashimoto, Takuma Sato, and Keita Imamura. "I just feel a sense of shame," said Yamashita as quoted from AFP. "We deeply apologize and intend to give the athletes thorough guidance from now on."
