TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong acknowledged the contribution of Indonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi to both Indonesia and the ASEAN region. Lee hoped that cooperation between the two countries would continue to run well although they will no longer be in charge this year.
Lee met with Jokowi at the annual Singapore-Indonesia Leaders’ Retreat in the Bogor Presidential Palace in West Java on Monday, April 29, 2024. In a press statement, Lee said that this seventh and final retreat was not just celebrating what the two countries have achieved together, it was also about continuity and looking ahead.
The Singapore PM assessed that the current vision and leadership vision have put Indonesia's economy on a strong economic trajectory and elevated ASEAN's standing as a participant in international affairs. Lee highlighted Jokowi's work during Indonesia's leadership in the G20 and also his leadership in ASEAN.
“Indonesia has been a constructive voice in a divided world,” said Lee in a joint press statement.
In the bilateral meeting, Jokowi and Lee discussed several areas of cooperation such as politics-defense, green economy-investment, socio-culture, and ASEAN regional issues. Indonesia and Singapore signed a memorandum of understanding or MoU on Community Empowerment in the Mangrove Ecosystem and the Indonesia-Singapore Joint Update on Defense Cooperation (JUDC).
