TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi reportedly invited his supporters to watch together or nobar Indonesian U-23 national team's match against Uzbekistan in the 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cup semifinal, which is slated to commence on Monday, April 29, at 9 p.m. Jakarta time.
The nobar event will be held at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.
Chairman of the Pro Jokowi or Projo volunteer group Budi Arie Setiadi and the chairman of the Jokowi Presiden (Bara JP) volunteer group Utje Gustav confirmed their attendance via short message to Tempo. Chairman of Jokowi Mania (Joman) volunteer group Immanuel Ebenezer also claimed that he had received the invitation.
“I will come alone,” Immanuel, who is familiarly called Noel, said on Monday afternoon.
However, Budi Arie did not elaborate on which volunteer groups were invited. “Those present are Jokowi’s volunteers,” he said, adding that he would arrive at the Palace at around 07:30 p.m. Jakarta time.
The semifinal match between Indonesia and Uzbekistan is set to take place at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium in Doha, Qatar. Indonesia, as a debutant, aims to create another history by reaching the final. The Garuda Muda squad is the runner-up in Group A with six points in three matches. After a 0-2 defeat to Qatar, the team bounced back and won over Australia 1-0 and Jordan 4-1.
In the quarterfinals, Indonesia managed to beat the Asian football giant, South Korea, in a dramatic fashion through a penalty shootout. The match ended in a 2-2 draw after 90 minutes of normal time, and Indonesia won 11-10 in the penalty shootout.
