Mount Ruang Erupts Again; Airports Closed, 18 Flights Canceled

30 April 2024 19:24 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaMount Ruang in Sitaro Islands Regency, North Sulawesi has erupted again today, April 30, forcing the closure of several airports in the region, beginning at 12 p.m. Central Indonesia Time (WITA) until May 1 at 12 p.m. WITA.

Ambar Suryoko, head of the Airport Authority Office of Manago Region VIII, confirmed that at least 18 flights have been canceled due to volcanic ash spewing from the eruption. The temporary closure of the airports was noted in the Notice to Airmen or Notam No. A1148/24 NOTAMR A1144/24, with the potential to extend if conditions remain unchanged.

“At present, 18 flights with a total of 1,745 passengers are canceled, and nine planes are grounded,” Ambar said in a statement on Tuesday.

He appealed to airlines to offer compensation to passengers who have acquired tickets. “Including options for a full refund, reschedule, or re-route to the nearest airport if seats remain available.”

He emphasized that compensation is necessary to help passengers affected by the closure of airport operations.

The airports that are forced to halt operations include Sam Ratulangi Airport, Melonguane Airport, Naha Airport, Siau Airport, Bolaang Mongondow Airport, Miangas Airport, and Pohuwato Airport. Meanwhile, Djalaluddin Airport operations are closed until 16:00 WITA.

Ambar explained that the Mount Ruang eruption was such a force majeure situation, assuring that the airport authority will continue to monitor and supervise the volcano's developments and impact on the airport's operations.
