TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said his ministry will speed up the reconstruction and reconciliation projects following the Lombok earthquake, West Nusa Tenggara.
“We estimate 36,000 houses and 150 schools are severely damaged,” said Basuki today, August 20, at the Vice President Office, Jakarta.
However, the data was obtained before the earthquake on Sunday, August 20. Basuki said his staffers were continuously updating the total number of damaged houses and losses in the province.
As many as 150 officers were deployed for the reconstruction and reconciliation projects in every Lombok region with the support of hundreds of engineering students.
Public facilities, such as markets, schools, mosques, and government offices, would be re-built by SOEs Karya. “The budget comes from BNPB (National Disaster Mitigation Agency) and emergency funds of the ministry,” he added.

As for public residences, Basuki revealed, he would adopt a concept dubbed Re-KOMPAK, a community-based model for post-disaster housing reconstruction, as previously applied in Mount Merapi, Central Java.
At that time, the government provided Rp50 million in cash per family to rebuild their houses in a bid to accelerate reconstruction process. “It’s not about the value, but they can start to move on their own because it will take a long time if they want to wait for the government's program,” he explained.
The government has earmarked Rp50 million to each family whose house was damaged by the Lombok earthquake. The first stage of the money distribution was targeted for 1,000 families on Tuesday, August 14.
