TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Public Works and Housing (PUPR) Ministry reminded the public that the current infrastructure construction projects done by the government aren't for lavish reasons.
“Whatever we’re constructing isn’t for lavish reasons. It has caused traffic jams, but it is to catch-up our infrastructure sector that has fallen behind,” said Public Works and Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono on Wednesday, September 13.
The ministry reasons that developing infrastructures is essential to improve Indonesia’s competitiveness at the global level. Indonesia is currently ranked 60th, while the ministry has set a goal to elevate Indonesia’s position to the 40th position.
Indonesia is currently facing a huge disparity between regions. The Java Island and Sumatra have already developed its basic infrastructure, where in order to improve it is only through a maintenance program.
Meanwhile, the ministry is currently setting up the basic infrastructure of other Indonesian islands such as Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Papua, and NTT.
