Indonesian Hajj Pilgrims Suffer Heatstroke in Saudi Arabia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hundreds of Indonesian Hajj pilgrims have fallen victim to the ever less-friendly climate in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, during the Hajj season. Until Wednesday, there were 68 people that were administered to the ICU mainly due to a heat stroke.
The temperature in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, at noon can reach up to 50 degrees Celsius. “Many of the Hajj pilgrims suffered from heatstroke,” said Masduki, Head of Public Relations, Data and Information Bureau at the Religious Affairs Ministry of Religious Affairs on Wednesday, August 30.

He reported that most of the Hajj pilgrims that became ill were dominated by elderly people over 60 years old who were extremely exhausted by the conditions. There are also cases of relapsing illness during the pilgrimage.
The Hajj organizing committee has coordinated with 286 Indonesian medical staffs in Saudi Arabia to assist the Indonesian Hajj pilgrims that are not 100 percent fit or who are unable to conduct several religious requirements that are mandated to be completed in a Hajj pilgrimage.
