TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The House of Representative said that the government needs to increase its security efforts in border regions to prevent Indonesian migrant workers (TKI) return home (mudik) through illegal tracks.
The House of Representatives’ (DPR) Labor Commission deputy chairman Saleh Partaonan Daulay views that the mobility of migrant workers heading to their hometown is predicted to spike.
The government is urged to monitor the possibility of illegal migrant workers (TKI) returning to Indonesia by using indecent and unsafe vessels. “The government must make sure that the homecoming exodus season of illegal migrants wouldn’t result in fatalities as what happened a few months ago,” he said today, Friday, June 23.
The Indonesian government, he went on, shall use the moment of mudik to facilitate the journey back to Indonesia for illegal TKI. In the same time, it can also be used as a moment to legalize their papers.
“The number of illegal Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia dominates the legal ones. There must be a systematic and continuous attempt to manage Indonesian migrant workers working there,” he said.
He suggested the government be more active in approaching illegal migrants to the regions where illegal tracks mostly used. Therefore, the government can proceed the legalities of the illegal TKI or return them home if they found ones. “We must monitor illegal tracks appropriately,” he said.
