Ride-Hailing Companies Respond to Tariff Change

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A number of online ride-hailing companies have responded to the government’s plan in regulating the industry’s upper and lower rate limit, similar to conventional taxi services regulation. One of them is Uber Indonesia that regrets the government's decision to limit its fares not far below the existing lower rates that apply to conventional taxis.

Rosabelle Sibarani from Fleishman-Hillard who represents Uber Indonesia stated that online ride-hailing companies have already taken into consideration a number of subjects that are regulated by the Transportation Ministry Regulation No. 32/2016. “If it is implemented, Indonesian citizens would have difficulties in getting access to reliable mobility options,” she said Wednesday, March 15, 2017.

Other than that, she added that the regulation would also hamper consumer’s options for flexible economic opportunities that are offered by ride-hailing companies.

Rosabelle said that the company will continue to communicate with the government regarding the regulation, which is said to take effect on April 1, 2017.

Meanwhile, Public Relations Manager for Go-Jek Indonesia Rindu Ragillia said that they are currently reviewing the regulation. “Our priority is how Go-Jek can provide a positive impact for its customers and partners,” she said. “And to enable many more Indonesians to become a micro-entrepreneur.”

Previously, the Director of Transport and Multimode at the Transportation Ministry, Cucu Mulyana, stated that the lower rate limit of online ride-hailing companies cannot be far too low compared to the lowest rate of a conventional taxi company. He views that ride-hailing companies are able to set their fares extremely cheap because they continue to push a promotional price and continue to receive the subsidy.

Cucu is not convinced that the tariff which is being set by online ride-hailing companies corresponds to prices based on economic principles. “These online ride-hailing companies endured billions of dollar worth of losses in other countries,” he said.
