TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Harsoyo submitted his resignation from his position as rector of Indonesian Islamic University (UII) in front of the Minister of Research Technology and Higher Education, Mohammad Nasir, that was present in the Closed Meeting with the Indonesian Private University Coordinator (Kopertis) V in Yogyakarta on Thursday, January 26, 2017.
"As a gesture of my moral responsibility, I resign myself from the position of UII Rector," Harsoyo said. Harsoyo then announced his decision in a press conference held in Yogyakarta.
According to him, what he's done is a form of moral responsibility. The tragedy that took away the lives of three UII students was in fact not his fault, but as a leader, he felt the responsibility to do so.
"[It's] my absolute failure as a leader, I offer my sincere apologies for tarnishing Indonesia’s academic image," Harsoyo said.
Harsoyo stated that he already has consulted with the management and foundation related to the decision he made. Which also included preparing his resignation notice a few days ago.
Research, Technology, and Higher Education Minister, Mohammad Nasir appreciates the decision taken by UII Rector Harsoyo. "I appreciate the resignation of Pak Rector [UII] as a form of moral responsibility," Nasir said.
