TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 rocked Mamasa, West Sulawesi, Wednesday, November 7, at 4:42 p.m.

“The earthquake has no potential for a tsunami,” BMKG wrote in a statement on its website. The epicenter was at 2.92 south latitude and 119.41 east longitude or about 9 kilometers southeast of Mamasa, West Sulawesi.

BMKG stated that the Mamasa earthquake was caused by an active Saddang fault.

“Based on the epicenter and the hypocenter of the quake, the shallow earthquake occurred due to the activity of the Saddang Fault,” said Acting Head of the BMKG Area IV Makassar, Joharman in Makassar on Wednesday.

Until Tuesday at 10 p.m. local time, the aftershocks were recorded to occur 78 times. It was analyzed for 41 times that the earthquake triggered by the mainshock of magnitude 5.5 then updated to M 5.2.

The Saddang fault stretches from the coast of Mamuju Beach, West Sulawesi, cutting diagonally across the Central South Sulawesi region, then south of South Sulawesi, Bulukumba City, to the East Selayar Island.

Joharman said the increase in seismic activity in West Sulawesi, South Sulawesi and Central Sulawesi was inseparable from the effects of the tectonic earthquake that occurred in Donggala and Palu with a magnitude of 7.7, which triggered the existing fault activities, such as the Saddang Fault, Walanae Fault or Matano Fault.
