TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Facebook has decided to invite Indonesian media Tirto.id as a third party fact checker in the social media giant’s attempt to reduce the spread of fake news or hoaxes.

Tirto.id is a national new media outlet that is certified by Poynter Institute, which is an international independent fact checker.

“We all have a responsibility to reduce the number of fake news, which is why we have partnered with Tirto.id that is certified by an international independent fact checker,” said Facebook Indonesia’s news partnership lead Alice Budisatrijo at the SCBD Equity Tower in South Jakarta today.

According to Alice, both Facebook and Tirto.id will review news pieces that were marked by the social media giant to test its facts and accuracy for the sake of the Indonesian public.

“By doing so, the public will be wiser in deciding which news pieces are good to read and which are not,” said Alice.

Tirto.id founder Sapto Anggoto voiced his support for the program and hopes to continue providing credible information for the masses.

“This is just the beginning and we will start by checking one-or-two news pieces that show indications of being fake every day. This is a challenge for us, I personally have not set a target quantity-wise, but more on the quality of correct information,” said Sapto Anggoto.

Sapto suggested that there will be more news media outlets that will partner with Facebook in this specific program to help it reach its goal.
