TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Communications and Information Minister Rudiantara warned social media companies to handle the spread of hoax and hate comments. He also said that he will take legal actions to companies that fail to follow suit.
Rudiantara issued the warning since blocking is not deemed effective to curb the omnipresent hoax. Facebook is one of the content media providers or social media platforms that is highlighted since it is related to numerous cases of negative content.

"The focus of blocking is not only on the owner of Facebook account, but also the provider," Rudiantara said in Jakarta on Friday (9/6).
Blocking a platform, Rudiantara claimed, is not the government’s first option due to the positive functions social media serve in modern era. However, it will be necessary when the provider ignores the current situation in Indonesia. Coercive measures, he added, have been implemented in many countries in which sanction is given to problematic social media related to hoaxes.
