TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) official Tweeter account, @BNPTRI, together with a number of state agencies, urged society to wage war against hoax contents through the hashtag #CerdasLawanHoax. On February 18, 2017, BNPT uploaded a number of contents related to fake news, or commonly known as hoaxes.
In their tweets, BNPT explained that content creators and spreaders of fake news can be charged with a six years of imprisonment together with a Rp 1 billion fine. This is explained in the Information and Online Transaction Law (ITE).
According to BNPT, hoaxes that have recently spread like wildfire can potentially act as a vehicle for the spread of pro radicalism narration. "Radical terrorist groups have massively spread their ideas through online media.
#CerdasLawanHoax," as quoted by @BNPTRI.
They also stated that in the past, propaganda was circulated through print mass-media or electronically. In the present time, online media or social media are the main choice for the spread of radicalism. "Internet really influences what people think and do, which also includes diverting someone into a radical," BNPT wrote.
The hoax phenomenon is a handful to resolve. Current communication trends, according to their tweets, is 10 to 90, meaning that 10 percent of it is the actual production of the information meanwhile 90 percent of them are willingly circulated. BNPT mentions that there are at least 500 radical websites active in Indonesia, a few of them are spread through the medium of a Buzzer or a robot account.
