TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-North Sumatra was chosen to host the National Conference of Violence against Women Recovery, officials said Monday, September 28.

The conference will be held from October 26 to 28, 2015.

Indriyati Suparno, the Women's National Commission (Komnas Perempuan) chairwoman for Recovery System Development, said the conference will discuss handling of the recovery of victims of violence against women.

"The conference will be attended by 200 participants from all over Indonesia, including the government, NGOs, and other community organizations," she said.

"Over the past year, we recorded that 293,220 cases of violence against women occurred. This data is only the tip of the iceberg. It means there are many cases that have not been reported," she said in a press conference on Monday.

Furthermore, she said that the treatment given to women who are victims of violence have been focused on law enforcement; ignoring the recovery process.

Indriyati said recovery is paramount in restoring the victims, their family, and community groups' life after the traumatic event; allowing them to regain strength and function as a human being.

"Therefore, we need a system to manage the recovery method."

Hasban Ritonga, the North Sumatera regional secretary, said that the provincial government supports the central's policy to deal with violence against women.

"We hope this conference can provide inputs to the new policy, including on recovery efforts and management. North Sumatera is one of Indonesia's areas that are prone to violence against women," he said.
