Import Causes Rupiah Depreciation, Government Says

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government said that the amount of import by Indonesia is one of the main causes of the Rupiah's depreciation against US Dollar and the economic slowdown.
Ari Dwipayana of the presidential communication team said that President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo had explained that currently, Indonesia is flooded not only by imported electronic goods, but also imported fruit and vegetable.
Ari added that the government is currently attempting to develop a production-based economy to allow the country to reduce import on certain products, and produce it in the domestically.
The president has also instructed Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman to increase the production capacity of rice, soybean and corn in the next three years, and sugar and meat in the next five years.
