TEMPO.CO, Washington – Inspired by a technology to detect a falling object from deep space, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has created a portable device to locate survivors trapped in post-disater debris.
"Known by the acronym 'FINDER', short for Finding Individuals for Disaster and Emergency Response, the device can locate people as far as 30 feet [nine meters] under crushed materials," NASA said, as cited by the Discovery News.
NASA explained that the FINDER uses advanced algorithms to isolate the tiny signals from a person's heartbeat by filtering out other signals, such as those from moving trees and animals. A similar technology had been used by NASA's Deep Space Network to locate spacecraft.
The FINDER's ultimate goal is to provide help in the rescue of victims of disasters, such as in earthquak or landslide disasters. The technology can quickly identify the presence of living victims, allowing rescue workers to deploy their limited resources more precisely.
