TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 3.4 shook the regency of Tasikmalaya and its surroundings in Indonesia on Wednesday, August 28, 2024. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) detected the earthquake at 10:36 am.
The head of BMKG Region II Tangerang Center, Hartanto, said that the earthquake was felt quite strongly in districts of Tasikmalaya Regency, such as Cipatujah, Cibalong and Pameungpeu areas in Garut Regency. The earthquake felt by residents there was on the MMI III intensity scale, which could be felt inside the house as if a truck was passing nearby.
"The earthquake was caused by fault activity in the local area," Hartanto said.
The earthquake was relatively shallow at a depth of 5 kilometers. According to Hartanto, the epicenter of the earthquake was located at 7.74 degrees south latitude and 107.84 degrees east longitude.
The source of the earthquake was located on land, 51 kilometers southwest of Tasikmalaya Regency. There have been no reports of damage to buildings as a result of the earthquake.
As of 11:08, BMKG monitoring results showed no aftershock activity. Hartanto urged the public to remain calm and follow the development of information, and not to be influenced by issues that are not yet clear.
