TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian athletes have broken new national records during their participation in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, according to the Indonesian National Olympics Committee (NOC) Chief Raja Sapta Oktohari.

The NOC chief's remarks were conveyed following the agency's evaluation of the performances of Indonesian athletes in the recently concluded Olympics.

"We break new national records during the Paris Olympics. For instance, we had our first female judo athlete qualify and compete in the 2024 Olympics," Oktohari stated while referring to judoka Maryam March Maharani, as per the statement received on Tuesday, August 27, 2024.

Apart from the female judo athlete, gymnast Rifda Irfanaluthfi became the first Indonesian to qualify for gymnastics at the Olympics. Indonesia's cyclist Bernard van Aert also became the only Southeast Asian to compete in the 2024 Olympics, he stated.

Meanwhile, Indonesia bagged two gold medals in the 2024 Olympics through the double victories of Veddriq Leonardo in sport climbing and Rizki Juniansyah in weightlifting -- the nation's first medal in the number.

It was Indonesia's first double gold medal since 1992.

"Rizki even broke a new Olympic record for Indonesia," Oktohari stated while referring to the weightlifter's 199 kg in clean and jerk.

Hence, the Indonesian NOC chief affirmed that the Indonesian contingent in the 2024 Olympics is worthy of praise from the government and other parties keen to express it.

"Moreover, to achieve the result, there are a lot of invisible hands who supported our athletes," he affirmed.

Oktohari expressed hope that Indonesia's achievements in the 2024 Olympics would motivate other athletes to strive to do their best during future Olympics editions.
