TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Olympic journey took a significant leap forward at the 2024 Paris Games as the country secured two gold medals and one bronze medal. This achievement pushed Indonesia to the 39th position in the overall medal tally.
Historically renowned for badminton dominance, Indonesia recently showcased its athletic diversity with gold medals in rock climbing and weightlifting. Veddriq Leonardo clinched the inaugural Olympic gold in men's speed climbing, while Rizki Juniansyah triumphed in the men's 73 kg weightlifting category. Gregoria Mariska Tunjung contributed a bronze in women's singles badminton.
Previous Olympics
Compared to Indonesia's achievement at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the Paris performance marked a substantial improvement. In 2020, Indonesia secured five medals consisting of one gold, one silver, and three bronze, and thus ranked 55th.
The two gold medals in Paris equaled the nation’s best Olympic result achieved in 1992 Barcelona.
Since its Olympic debut in 1952, Indonesia has assembled 10 gold, 14 silver, and 16 bronze medals, with badminton being the cornerstone of its Olympic success totaling eight gold medals. The only Olympic Games without badminton gold for Indonesia was London 2012.
