Jokowi Honors Indonesian Medalists at Paris 2024 Paralympics with Bonuses

11 September 2024 20:06 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo welcomed the Indonesian contingent returning from the Paris 2024 Paralympics at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday, September 11, 2024. He expressed his utmost appreciation for the athletes' remarkable achievements in representing Indonesia on the global stage.

The Indonesian contingent concluded their journey at the world's largest sports stage for disabled athletes, which took place from August 28 to September 8, 2024, with a commendable 50th-place finish. Indonesia brought home a total of 1 gold medal, 8 silver medals, and 5 bronze medals.

“We are immensely proud of their accomplishments,” Jokowi stated. “These achievements are not the result of instant success but rather a culmination of a long-term process. I hope this inspires enthusiasm and optimism.”

On this occasion, the President announced substantial bonuses for the medalists: gold medal winners will receive Rp6 billion, silver medal winners Rp2.75 billion, and bronze medal winners Rp1.65 billion.

Moreover, athletes who did not secure medals will also be recognized with a bonus of Rp250 million. Coaches will also receive bonuses, although the specific amounts were not disclosed.

Minister of Youth and Sports Dito Ariotedjo emphasized that Indonesia's achievements at the Paris 2024 Paralympics marked a new milestone that must be celebrated. This was the largest number of medals won by Indonesia in its history of participating in the Paralympics.

Dito expressed hope that this success would serve as a foundation for future endeavors, particularly the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympics. “On behalf of the government, I’d like to thank you for creating history, achieving remarkable feats, and most importantly, becoming an inspiration, especially for the younger generation,” he said in an official statement from the Indonesian Paralympic Committee (NPC) on Tuesday, September 10, 2024.
