Indonesian Govt Runs Runway Trial for Nusantara Airport at New Capital

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said the runway test of the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) Nusantara Airport in East Kalimantan had gone smoothly.

"The takeoff and landing test process carried out using a King Air type 200 PK CAO calibration aircraft was successful and went smoothly," said Budi Karya in a written statement on Sunday, August 25, 2024, as quoted by Antara.

Minister of Public Works and Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, other ministry officials, and construction officials also witnessed the runway trial at Nusantara Airport.

The test was part of the ‘proving flight’, an operational process to ensure the readiness of new flight routes. The government also tested air routes surrounding the airport to avoid flight conflicts with airports in Balikpapan and Samarinda.

"So, when the flight frequency is high, there’s no airspace flight conflict,” he said. 

The proving flight process aims to ensure that the runway and air routes function properly under operational conditions. This includes testing the feasibility and integration of the air navigation system.

Furthermore, said Budi Karya, after the trial, the government will carry out various additional assessments related to flight safety and security. 

Minister Basuki explained that the Nusantara Airport runway’s construction has reached a length of 1,025 x 30 meters. "Today, even with a drizzle, we managed to reach 1,025 meters, where we target 2,200 meters at the beginning of September to allow the B737 jet to land,” he said.
