TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that no Indonesian citizens were affected by Typhoon Yagi, which struck Vietnam from September 7 to 12, 2024. In Vietnam, the disaster tragically resulted in 199 deaths, 800 injuries, and 128 missing persons.

The Indonesian Embassy in Hanoi has been actively coordinating with local authorities and Indonesian community centers. As of this report, there is no information indicating that any Indonesians were victims of the typhoon.

Based on self-reported data, the Indonesian Embassy in Hanoi recorded a total of 915 Indonesian citizens residing in Vietnam. The majority of these individuals are located in southern Vietnam.

For emergencies, Indonesian citizens can contact the Embassy hotline at +84705231990 or the Indonesian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City at +84938730030.

Prior to the typhoon, Hanoi authorities evacuated thousands of people living near the Red River due to rising water levels that reached their highest point in 20 years. Several streets in the city have been inundated with water for days following Typhoon Yagi's impact on northern Vietnam, resulting in 179 fatalities.

Typhoon Yagi was recorded as the most powerful typhoon of the year. Characterized by strong winds and heavy rainfall, Typhoon Yagi made landfall in Vietnam on Saturday, September 8, 2024, and caused landslides, bridge collapses, and widespread devastation in the affected region.

The landslides and flash floods triggered by the typhoon led to power outages for safety reasons. Mai Van Khiem, Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, stated that the water level in the Red River had reached its highest recorded level in two decades. Heavy rainfall was predicted to continue for the following two days.

As a precautionary measure, several schools in Hanoi informed students to engage in remote learning throughout the week. The Vietnamese government confirmed that residents living in low-lying areas had been evacuated to safer locations.
