Prior to the typhoon, Hanoi authorities evacuated thousands of people living near the Red River due to rising water levels that reached their highest point in 20 years. Several streets in the city have been inundated with water for days following Typhoon Yagi's impact on northern Vietnam, resulting in 179 fatalities.
Typhoon Yagi was recorded as the most powerful typhoon of the year. Characterized by strong winds and heavy rainfall, Typhoon Yagi made landfall in Vietnam on Saturday, September 8, 2024, and caused landslides, bridge collapses, and widespread devastation in the affected region.
The landslides and flash floods triggered by the typhoon led to power outages for safety reasons. Mai Van Khiem, Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, stated that the water level in the Red River had reached its highest recorded level in two decades. Heavy rainfall was predicted to continue for the following two days.
As a precautionary measure, several schools in Hanoi informed students to engage in remote learning throughout the week. The Vietnamese government confirmed that residents living in low-lying areas had been evacuated to safer locations.
